WebInSight

The goal of the WebInSight Project is to learn what impedes access to the web and develop technology to improve access. The accessibility of the world wide web is of paramount concern because of its growing importance in accessing information. Our initial work centered around providing alternative text for web images (a problem for web accessibility for at least a decade) to improve image accessibility.

We are currently pursuing the following four projects:

• Accessmonkey - a scripting framework designed to enable anyone to improve the accessibility of the web without relying on the support of web developers.
• WebAnywhere - a web-based screen reader to provide blind web users equal access to the web from any computer without requiring the installation of special, expensive software.
• WebinSitu - informative user studies in situ conducted with blind web users to gain insights into the accessibility problems they face.
• WebEval - a succinct test of web page accessibility based on whether images have alternative text.
